Ride Shocks 2020 Toyota Tacoma Build Breakdown

Ride Shocks Toyota Tacoma with C4 Fabrication front Rock Runner bumper and Warn Winch.

Our 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road has been through a lot – from rigorous research and development (R&D) testing to tackling some of the toughest trails and terrain from Baja to the California desert. With its proven durability and resilience, this truck is overdue for some exciting new upgrades. Let’s take a closer look at the recent modifications made to enhance both performance and functionality of this off-road beast.

Heavy-Duty Front Protection: C4 Bumper & Winch Setup

One of the standout upgrades to the Tacoma is the C4 Fabrication Rock Runner Bumper. This is a modular, 3-piece design utilizing bolt-on wings built with 11 gauge steel and 3/16” mounting plates. Their frame support brackets pair nicely with the Ride Shocks external reservoir bracket, making it a perfect fit. The Rock Runner Bumper provides exceptional protection while accommodating the VR Evo 10-S Warn Winch with synthetic line – a crucial tool for serious off-roading. The synthetic line is a big improvement over steel cable in longevity, safety, and weight. With a Factor 55 Flat Link for reliable recovery operations, this setup is an essential addition for any overlanding or off-roading adventure. When you’re in a bind, there’s no better brand than Warn to get you out of trouble.

Additionally, Relentless Fab skid plates have been added to protect the engine and transmission from rocks and rough terrain. These heavy-duty skid plates ensure that the Tacoma can handle even the nastiest rock sections without damaging critical components like the oil pan or transmission.

Lighting Up the Trails: Baja Designs Lights

Lighting is crucial when you’re venturing off the beaten path, which is why our Tacoma is equipped with top-notch lighting solutions from Baja Designs. A 30-inch Baja Designs LED light bar sits neatly behind the grill, providing tons of light during night runs. Our A-Pillar rocks the Baja Designs Squadrons with their amber lenses, adding incredible visibility in zone 2 on the sides of the trail in the dark and adding an additional layer of safety when navigating tricky off-road trails.

Ride Suspension Upgrades: Performance Shocks and Frame Support

With all the added weight from the upgrades, the Tacoma’s suspension has also received a significant boost. The Ride Shocks 2.5 Coilovers with Weight Range 3 include a 700-pound spring to handle the additional weight. The DPA Adjusters allow for fine-tuning of high and low-speed compression, giving the driver the ability to adjust the ride based on terrain. On rough off-road trails, the suspension is tightened up for better control, while on smoother roads, it’s relaxed for a smoother ride.

A notable feature is the C4 Fabrication Frame Support Bracket, which works in tandem with the Ride Shocks reservoir bracket, creating a robust setup that doesn’t require any additional modifications. This is especially important for our Tacoma, as the added winch setup and heavier-duty bumper require strong frame support to prevent any frame flex or stress.

Front Suspension and Tires: AccuTune UCAs and BFG All-Terrain Tires

No off-road vehicle is complete without a capable suspension and tire setup, and the 2020 Tacoma is no exception. The AccuTune Offroad Upper Control Arms feature sealed FK Rod Ends, giving the front suspension the flexibility and strength needed for rugged terrains. These control arms also push the tire slightly forward, allowing for the use of 285/70/17 tires – a common size for Tacoma owners that fits well without requiring a cab mount chop.

The 17” Raceline Wheels we are running have a backspacing on -12, so they give you plenty of room to ensure no contact with your upper control arm or fender liner. They look great, they’re super durable, and they are backed by 20 years of experience producing quality wheels. Paired with our BFG All-Terrain KO2 tires, this has been the perfect fit without needing a cab mount chop while also providing outstanding performance.

Rock Protection and Additional Storage: Skid Plates and Sherpa Roof Rack

To further enhance off-road capabilities, the Tacoma is equipped with Relentless Fab Rock Sliders, made from heavy-duty DOM tubing. These sliders act as both a step and a protective barrier when navigating rocky trails, allowing the vehicle to pivot on rocks without risking damage.

On the roof, the Sherpa Roof Rack has been added to provide additional storage capacity. This sturdy rack is simple to install and has proven invaluable for carrying bulky gear, especially on off-road trips or traveling to events. By moving larger items to the roof, it frees up the bed for the heavier equipment and supplies.

Ride Shocks Tacoma with Deaver U402 Stage 1 leaf pack.

Rear Suspension: Deaver Leaf Pack, Ride Shocks & AccuTune U-Bolt Flip Kit

The Tacoma’s rear suspension has also been upgraded with a Deaver U402 Stage 1 leaf pack to support the added weight from the modifications. While slightly over-sprung for the current configuration, this setup will be perfectly balanced once more weight is added to the truck.

For optimal control and a smoother ride, Ride Shock Stage 3 rear shocks are used, along with AccuTune Offroad’s U-bolt flip kit and foam bump stops. This means when you do bottom out, it will be much softer and more controlled compared to the factory rubber bump stops, reducing harsh impacts and enhancing comfort while off-roading.

Rear Protection: C4 Rock Runner Bumper & Baja Designs S1 Lights

To complete the rear protection, the Tacoma has been fitted with the C4 Rock Runner bumper, offering high clearance and comprehensive protection for the rear end. It not only shields the back and sides of the truck, but also houses the S1 Baja Designs lights, which are crucial for better visibility in low-light environments including dusty desert driving.

All your lights at your fingertips: sPod Controller

For ultimate control over all the added lights and accessories, the Tacoma uses an sPod BantamX controller. This system makes operation of the front and rear Baja Designs lights a breeze, with room for additional lights in the future. Whether you’re upgrading with more lighting options or other accessories, this controller ensures that everything runs smoothly.

Weighing in at approximately 5,100 to 5,200 pounds, the added components are handled with ease by the combined suspension components from Ride Shocks, AccuTune Offroad, and Deaver. Whether you’re cruising the highway or tackling the most difficult off-road trails, this Tacoma is ready for anything.
